Cyber Crime Cases In India Multiplying Shows CERT-IN Data Tabled In Parliament

NEW DELHI: The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), which coordinates efforts on cybersecurity issues, reported a total of 607,220 cyber security incidents, with 15,651 Indian websites hacked until June of this year.

CERT-In has reported that a total of 2,08,456, 3,94,499, 11,58,208 and 6,07,220 cyber security incidents have been observed during the year 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 (upto June) respectively.

Out of this, a total number of 17,560, 24,768, 26,121 and 15,651 Indian websites were hacked during the year 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 (up to June) respectively

Meanwhile, in another set of data presented at the Lok Sabha during the monsoon session, the union government said over 93,000 cases of cybercrime were reported in the country between 2017 and 2019.

Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai stated that 46 cases of cyber terrorism were reported in the country during the same time period, with FIRs filed under Section 66F of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, the number of cybercrime cases registered in 2017, 2018, and 2019 was 21796, 27248, and 44546, respectively, he said in a written response to a query.

According to the minister, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) serves as the national agency for responding to cybersecurity incidents under Section 70B of the Information Technology Act of 2000.

The CERT-In receives information about malware infections in networks of entities across sectors from its situational awareness systems and threat intelligence sources.

Whenever an incident is brought to the attention of CERT-In, it issues alerts and advisories to the entities involved as well as sectoral Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) for corrective action, he explained.
