Fake Kidney Sale: Couple Cheated Of Rs 40 Lakh On Pretext Of Selling Kidney

HYDERABAD: A Hyderabad based couple was duped of Rs 40 lakh by cyber fraudsters who pretended to arrange Rs 1.20 crore in exchange for their kidneys.

According to the police, about a year ago the couple took Rs one crore loan to start a business. However, due to the lockdown, the business did not pick up, and the couple had to face significant losses.

“To recover from losses and repay loans, they were on the lookout for people who needed kidney transplants. After searching for numbers, they made contact with a person who promised to facilitate the sale of kidneys for Rs 1.20 crore,” said a senior official of Hyderabad cyber crime cell.

The conman collected around Rs 40 lakh from the couple on several occasions under the guise of obtaining clearance for kidney donation. However, the fraudsters did not take calls and turned off their mobile phones for a few days.

It was then they realised they had been duped, they went to the Hyderabad cyber crime police, who have started the investigation.

Meanwhile, in another instance Fraudsters set up a phoney website in the name of a prominent Bengaluru hospital, offering Rs 5 crore to anyone who wanted to sell their kidney.

Dr. Niranjan Rai of Manipal Hospitals, Old Airport Road, has filed a cybercrime police report. In response to Dr. Rai’s accusation, authorities have filed a criminal complaint against one Dr. Thomas Joseph, who is accused of creating the website.

The scammers created a phoney website that looked identical to Manipal Hospitals’ official website.
