Check Your Own Bank’s Veracity: Fake SBI Branch Busted in Chhattisgarh
A fake SBI branch was busted in Chhattisgarh’s Chhapora village. Three operators have been arrested for running the fraudulent branch, and investigations are ongoing to uncover how many people were affected.
Chhattisgarh — A fake branch of the State Bank of India (SBI) operating in a rented shop at a commercial complex in Chhapora village was exposed by local authorities. The fraudulent bank had been operational since September 18, with five employees working at the branch. The police raided the establishment on Friday, arresting three operators who had set up the branch with banners, posters, and other SBI-branded materials.
According to Additional Superintendent of Police Rama Patel, the fake branch came under suspicion after local residents lodged complaints. A team from SBI’s regional office in Korba confirmed the branch was fraudulent following an inspection. The arrested individuals, including the alleged mastermind posing as the branch manager, claimed to have recruited employees through interviews.

The police seized computers and other materials from the branch, and investigations are ongoing to determine how many people were defrauded and the total amount of money collected. The operators have been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Authorities are now looking into the full extent of the fraud and how the operation was able to function undetected for over a week. This case is reminiscent of a similar incident in Tamil Nadu in 2020, where individuals set up a fake SBI branch during the lockdown.
