As the Mahakumbh 2025 approaches, Uttar Pradesh is ramping up its cybersecurity measures to protect the grand event from the rising threat of cyberattacks. Recognized as a global event by the Indian and Uttar Pradesh governments, the Mahakumbh has become a prime target for cybercriminals aiming to deface websites, disrupt services, and defraud visitors.

To tackle these challenges, a dedicated team from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and a specialist from the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Allahabad have joined forces with the UP Police.

Under the leadership of Tanu Upadhyay, CO (Cyber) for Mahakumbh-2025 Mela, a four-member team from IIT-Kanpur and the IIIT-A expert are stationed in the mela area to assist 180 specially trained UP Police personnel.

These personnel have undergone rigorous training at the National Cybercrime Training Centre (CyTrain). Additionally, a dedicated team led by ADG (Cybercrime) Binod K Singh at the UP Police Headquarters in Lucknow oversees all virtual security aspects of the event.

“Cybercriminals often target large-scale events like Mahakumbh to create disruptions and embarrassment for the government,” said SSP (Mela) Rajesh Dwivedi. “We are maintaining constant vigilance to ensure the safety and integrity of all digital platforms associated with the event.”

The official Mahakumbh website, [kumbh.gov.in], along with its hosting server and mobile applications, has undergone stringent security audits by expert agencies. These include the Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) by the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC), the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO).

To safeguard the event’s digital infrastructure from cyber threats such as distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, ransomware, and port scanning, advanced measures like IP monitoring, network firewalls, and other protocols have been implemented. The Telecom Security Operation Centre (TSOC) of the Department of Telecom (DoT) is monitoring these systems round the clock.

A vulnerability audit, conducted by experts from IIIT-Allahabad, further strengthened the cybersecurity of software, web applications, and digital services provided by private vendors.

Identified vulnerabilities were promptly addressed to bolster defenses.

So far, the cyber cell has flagged 78 suspicious websites, out of which seven fake ones have been taken down after thorough verification. Legal actions have been initiated against five fake websites, leading to the arrest of four individuals from Varanasi, Azamgarh (Uttar Pradesh), and Nalanda (Bihar).

With these robust measures in place, the UP Police and their expert collaborators are leaving no stone unturned to ensure a safe and secure Mahakumbh 2025 for millions of devotees and visitors.
