In a deeply troubling development, a PhD scholar from IIT Kanpur has accused Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mohsin Khan, a 2013 batch PPS officer currently serving at the rank of DSP, of sexual harassment. The scholar alleges that Khan befriended her by falsely claiming to be unmarried, established a romantic relationship, and later pursued physical intimacy under the pretext of marriage.

The scholar, who resides in the IIT Kanpur hostel, reported that when she brought up the topic of marriage, Khan began harassing and mentally pressuring her. Unable to endure the distress, she approached IIT Kanpur’s administration, including the director and professors, who assured her of their full support.

Following the scholar’s complaint, an FIR has been registered against ACP Mohsin Khan. The Kanpur police have confirmed that Khan has been removed from his charge with immediate effect as part of the disciplinary process. Senior police officials are now overseeing the investigation to ensure fairness and transparency.

The case has sparked widespread concern over the conduct of law enforcement officers. The accused officer did not respond to media inquiries regarding the allegations. IIT Kanpur has referred the matter to higher authorities, including the police in Lucknow, for further action.

This incident has raised critical questions about police accountability and the safety of women in academic spaces. The swift action of filing an FIR and removing the officer from his position has been seen as a necessary step in ensuring justice. The findings of the ongoing investigation will be crucial in determining the next steps and could set a precedent for addressing similar cases in the future.
