Mumbai : Police have apprehended a 27-year-old interior designer from Ambala, Haryana, for his alleged role in a significant cyberattack targeting HDFC Life Insurance. The suspect is accused of conspiring with a Hong Kong-based mastermind to steal sensitive customer data and extort the company.

Details of the Breach

HDFC Life Insurance reported a cyberattack that occurred between November 19 and November 21, 2024, compromising confidential information of its policyholders. Cybercriminals exploited an email account and a WhatsApp connection to gain unauthorized access to sensitive data, which included policy numbers, names, addresses, contact details, and critical health information.

The attackers initiated contact with HDFC Life on November 19, threatening to expose the stolen data unless their ransom demands were met. A second threat was sent via WhatsApp, escalating the situation further.

How the Cyberattack Was Executed

Investigations revealed that the suspect infiltrated HDFC Life’s server system by posing as a prospective policy buyer. By intercepting One-Time Passwords (OTPs), he gained unauthorized access to the company’s database. The stolen data was then shared with the Hong Kong-based hacker, who downloaded the compromised information.

As part of their extortion strategy, the cybercriminals sent samples of the stolen data to HDFC Life, demonstrating the scale of the breach and pressuring the company for ransom.

HDFC Life’s Response

Following the breach, HDFC Life promptly lodged a complaint with the South Region Cyber Police, detailing the incident through its Associate Vice President (Legal). A case was registered under various provisions of the BNS Act and IT Act.
