Senior IPS officer Kalpana Nayak, former Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB), has alleged an attempt on her life after exposing irregularities in police recruitment.

In a complaint to DGP Shankar Jiwal, she sought an unbiased investigation into the July 29, 2024, fire that gutted her office chamber in Chennai, just days after she flagged discrepancies in communal reservation in the recruitment of Sub-Inspectors, constables, prison warders, and firemen.

Sequence of Events:

  • March 2024: Nayak submitted a detailed note highlighting flaws in recruitment, but it was ignored.
  • High Court Order: The Madras High Court later directed TNUSRB to rectify the selection list after a petition raised concerns.
  • July 29, 2024: Minutes before she reached TNUSRB headquarters in Egmore, a fire broke out in her chamber, allegedly due to a short circuit. Nayak, upon arrival, found her charred chair, stating that had she arrived earlier, she could have lost her life.
  • Revised List Released: The revised selection list was published on the TNUSRB website without her approval, raising suspicions.

Allegations & Investigation:

  • Sabotage Suspected: Nayak termed the incident foul play, questioning why no immediate inquiry was held against officials responsible for office maintenance.
  • Complaint Filed: On August 15, 2024, she escalated the matter to the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, and Chennai Police Commissioner, demanding a thorough probe.
  • Police Response: DGP Jiwal cited initial findings of an electrical short circuit but referred the case for further investigation after Nayak’s concerns.

Nayak’s Statement:

She criticized the lack of updates six months after her complaint, saying: “If a senior officer’s safety cannot be assured in her own office, it casts a dark shadow on the state of policing.” She called for a professional investigation to uncover the truth and hold those responsible accountable.
