Man Arrested For Creating Fake Instagram Accounts And Posting Morphed Photos of Woman

NEW DELHI: In the age of social media, our online identities are often an extension of our physical selves. But what happens when someone takes control of that identity and distorts it beyond recognition?

The Delhi Police Cyber Cell recently arrested a man for allegedly creating numerous Instagram accounts for a woman from Delhi and uploading morphed photos of her.

The accused, identified as Roshan Sharma, was apprehended in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, sending shockwaves through the online community and raising questions about online safety and privacy.

INSTAGRAM MISUSED

On February 3, the incident was reported to the Cyber PS Jyoti Nagar in the North-East District by a woman who claimed that an unknown person had created multiple fake Instagram accounts using her identity and photos that had been digitally altered.

Upon further investigation, three Instagram profiles with obscene photos and morphed images of the complainant were discovered.

The complainant’s personal cell phone number was also discovered in the Instagram profile.

FIR REGISTERED BY DELHI POLICE

As a result, on February 27, 2019, the PS Cyber Police Station of the North East District filed a First Information Report under sections 354A, 354D, 509, and 109 of the Indian Penal Code.

FACEBOOK HEADQUARTERS IN US SHARED DETAILS

The Instagram profiles in question had their registrant information and IP log addresses obtained from Facebook’s headquarters in the United States.

The Instagram account’s mobile phone was tracked to the Loni neighbourhood of Ghaziabad based on the information acquired through technical surveillance (UP). “Human intelligence was collected via sources in the Loni area,” the police reported.

Someone named Roshan S/o Late Ajay Sharma was reportedly arrested in the wee hours from Ankur Colony, Loni, Ghaziabad (U.P).

Two SIM cards and a mobile phone believed to have been used in the commission of crime were also found in his hands, police said.

The criminal admitted to the authorities that they had created phoney Instagram accounts after lengthy questioning.

During a particularly heated dispute with his girlfriend, the complainant (a friend of his girlfriend) became involved, and he also abused her. As a result of the abuse, the victim contacted her siblings, who proceeded to assault the suspect physically. He took vengeance by downloading her photos from her WhatsApp profile, creating three fake Instagram profiles in her name, and uploading her morphed pictures with her mobile number, police said.

According to police, they need to dig deeper into the case.
