Marketing Hype or Truth: Showcase Your Skills In Mobile Password Cracking - Capture The Flag By FCRF & Root64

NOIDA: Future Crime Research Foundation (FCRF), along with Root64 Infosec Foundation, will conduct world-class Capture The Flag (CTF) to crack the passwords of locked mobile devices.

This event aims to check the capability of the best tools and technologies available that can help law enforcement agencies in investigating complicated cases.

What Is The Need For Tool To Crack Mobile Phone Password

Since cybercrime is on a sharp rise and most of the crime involves the usage of a smartphone so, sophisticated digital forensics resources are urgently needed.

In a joint survey conducted by FCRF and Root64, we found that cracking mobile phone passwords is one of the biggest problems state and central agencies face.

Password Breaking or Passcode Cracking is one of the most extensive investigation pain areas. The biggest challenge for any law enforcement agency is to unlock seizing mobile devices from criminals or recovering unidentified devices or phones from the deceased.

In these dire circumstances, mobile phones become the last hope of getting some evidence or details about the crimes. Specially investigation that requires scanning WhatsApp chats or other internet activities.

LinkedIn post by a senior IPS officer and cyber investigator Prof Triveni Singh, SP, Cyber Crime, UP Police.

A senior officer in a central agency told The420, “Most of the investigation requires examination of mobile phones. Not only it can help in giving great insight into crime but it can also be presented as evidence before the court. Such tools can not only be useful in cracking local crime, blind murders, and cyber crimes but also checking terror activity, big financial frauds, and international syndicates.”

WHAT IS THE CURRENT PROBLEM

Though there are numerous offerings and claims by global tech companies, FCRF and Root64, in their survey, received multiple reports from law enforcement agencies that most of the available tools are ineffective. In several ground investigations, these mobile password-cracking tools struggle to unlock the phone, leaving the investigators stuck mid-way.

Even mobile phone manufacturers are strengthening their security features. They are bringing complex passcodes and phone protection, making crack programs more challenging.

It must be noted that various state and central agencies in India are using or buying software from different leading companies, but the problem persists. Also, there is no uniformity in the prices of these tools (no defined MRP).

During our survey, as a solution, top officers recommended a live demonstration or conducting capture-the-flag events to check the actual competence of these tools.

Officials mentioned that expensive software and tools are purchased but never used as they fail to deliver. They suggested live demonstrations must be conducted to ensure real proof of concept (POC) regarding the actual utilities of these password-cracking tools.

Such a test will prove to be a litmus test for big companies as it will prove the actual capability of their product or expose their marketing gimmick.

WHAT IS CAPTURE THE FLAG

There are numerous organisations that claim to hack any password or passcode on any mobile phone. We invite representatives of such tech companies, OEMs, vendors, start-ups and researchers to showcase their skills and talents by performing a live demonstration.
