Matrimony Fraud: Bhopal Cyber Police Arrest Ghaziabad Man For Cheating Women On Pretext Of Marriage

BHOPAL: With the arrest of an online scammer from Ghaziabad, the cybercrime branch of Bhopal claimed to have busted a matrimony fraud scam. The cyber criminals created fake profiles on various matrimonial websites, posing as an eligible bachelor working in leading private companies or banks, and lured women and their families into his net under the guise of marriage.

Police said the accused befriended women over the phone and stole money from them under various guises, such as unexpected illness, wedding shopping, and so on.

The accused, 35, is married and works as a property broker in Ghaziabad, while his wife has private employment. He is only has a high school pass.

Police said that when his wife left for work, the accused began looking for a target on matrimonial websites.

The accused defrauded three to four women, including a girl from Bhopal, and was in contact with 40-50 others over the phone.

According to investigation officer SI Devendra Sahu, a retired senior BMC officer and his wife recently approached the cyber-crime branch and mentioned in their complaint that they had created a profile for their daughter on a matrimonial website in order to find a suitable match for her.

A few days later, they received a request from an account named Abhishek Sharma, who introduced himself as an HR manager working for a private bank.

He began talking to the couple and their daughter, expressing his desire to marry her. After gaining their trust, Abhishek began speaking with their daughter and asked her to deposit money into his account for wedding preparations. In two transactions, the woman put Rs 50,000 into his account. Then he severed all ties with the family. When the couple realised they had been tricked, they went to the cybercrime division and filed a report.

On the basis of the accused’s mobile number, police filed a fraud case against him and began an investigation.

According to SI Sahu, the accused Deepak Kumar Sinha, 35, was apprehended from his flat in Ghaziabad based on technical analysis and investigation.

Sinha, according to SI Sahu, is married and works as a real estate dealer. He has completed his education up to the 12th grade. His wife is employed by a private firm.

When she started working, the accused began contacting women through matrimonial websites using bogus accounts. He severed all ties with them after befriending them and syphoning money from them.

He was in touch with 40-50 women, and their messages and chats are being scanned on his phone.

He had recently begun matrimony fraud, thus he had only victimised 2-3 women. A detailed investigation is being carried out to find how many people he has cheated.
