Major Cyberattack Hits Italy’s Foreign Ministry and Airports, Claimed by Pro-Russian Hackers

A pro-Russian hacker group launched a cyberattack on Italy’s Foreign Ministry and major airports, temporarily disrupting services but causing no significant operational issues.

On Saturday, several official websites in Italy, including those of the Foreign Ministry and Milan’s two major airports, came under a cyberattack. The attack, believed to be orchestrated by the pro-Russian hacker group Noname057(16), temporarily disrupted these websites. However, the incident did not lead to any significant disruptions in airport operations, as confirmed by the managing company SEA.

The hackers claimed responsibility for the attack through a Telegram post, referring to the incident as a response to “Russophobia” and calling it a “well-deserved cyber response.” Italy’s cybersecurity agency believes the attack was a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, a method where hackers flood a network with excessive traffic, rendering it inoperable for a period.

The agency responded swiftly, mitigating the impact of the attack in less than two hours. Assistance was provided to all affected institutions to restore services efficiently. Importantly, flights at Milan’s Linate and Malpensa airports remained unaffected, and the airports’ mobile apps continued to function despite the disruption.
