FIR Filed Against IAS officer Majid Drabu, Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Five Others
The Anti-Corruption Bureau of Jammu and Kashmir has filed an FIR against Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, IAS officer Majid Drabu, and five others for illegally allotting evacuee land, highlighting serious accusations of corruption and misuse of authority.
Srinagar: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Jammu and Kashmir Police has filed an FIR against Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of the Hurriyat Conference, his brother-in-law Majid Drabu, an IAS officer, and five others for allegedly encroaching on custodian land with the help of revenue officials.
The FIR was filed following a preliminary inquiry by the ACB, which uncovered that the Custodian Department illegally allotted evacuee land without obtaining government sanctions and without holding open auctions. The inquiry revealed that the land, belonging to Imam-u-Din in Hazratbal, Srinagar, under survey number 640, was allocated to several individuals, including Dil Rafiqa, in gross violation of rules.
The illegal allotment involved 7 Kanal 19 Marlas and 97 square feet of land (approximately one acre) and benefited individuals including Dr. Majeed, Majid Khalil Ahmad Drabu, Mohd. Amin Khan, Ab. Majeed Bhat, Qazi Bilal Ahmad, and Umer Farooq. The ACB investigation revealed that officials from the Custodian Department, in collusion with the Revenue Department officials, dishonestly allotted the land, thereby causing wrongful loss to the state exchequer.
Majid Drabu, a senior IAS officer currently serving as Control Legal Metrology in J&K, and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Kashmir and Hurriyat Conference chairman, were implicated in this scheme. The ACB report suggests that they maintained criminal silence by not taking timely action against the encroachers, thereby benefiting themselves and the allottee.
Officials have stated that if the charges are proven, the land and house in which Mirwaiz lives in the Nageen area of Srinagar could be confiscated. The evacuee or custodian lands belong to those who migrated to Pakistan after Partition and remain under government control.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has termed the filing of the FIR as an attempt to malign his image, stating that no property at present belongs to him in Nageen. The residential land and house were purchased by his father in 1973. In a statement, Mirwaiz added that this media propaganda is similar to the allegations made against him in 2018, which were proven false.
The Custodian General J&K has reiterated that action will be taken against those who have illegally occupied such properties, with punishment extending up to three years of imprisonment as per the J&K Evacuees (Administration of Property) Act, 2006.
