8 Engineering Graduate Arrested For Running Fake Gaming Website With Russian Agents

TAMIL NADU: The Tamil Nadu police’s Cyber Crime Wing discovered a network of fraudulent online gaming portals managed by a gang of engineers who are suspected of defrauding people out of ten crore rupees. The gang had been paid in cryptocurrencies by Russian operators.

Manikandan, 26, was arrested by Kallakurichi police in October and is suspected of being one of the portal’s operators. The police then apprehended eight more engineering graduates. The arrests were made when high-volume bank transactions were discovered.

Amresh Pujari, Additional Director-General of Police, Cyber Crime Wing, directed a thorough inquiry by a special squad led by Superintendent of Police M.R.Sibi Chakravarthy.

The squad raided Pammal, Sankar Nagar, and Ambattur, arresting Sasikumar, Saikumar, Raj Kumar, Rajesh Kumar, and Mohammed Asif, all engineering graduates aged 24-26.

They were seized with laptops, desktop computers, mobile phones, ATM cards, pen drives, SIM cards, and an automobile.

“The accused are thought to be Russian operators’ agents, and they were interacting via e-mail,” said Sibi Chakravarthy.

“They used the software that they provided. The group had coded the application so that they could even select who won and who lost; after bets were placed and payments were made, the accused ensured that the customers lost all of their money. The group was making a lot of money,” Chakravarthy added.

They hired people for a few thousand rupees to obtain SIM cards and deposit the money in bogus bank accounts. According to Sibi Chakravarthy, the initial investigation revealed that they had transacted with foreign businesses using cryptocurrencies.

The police will notify the Enforcement Directorate and the Income Tax Department of the existence of this network. Steps are being done to limit the use of online gaming websites.
