Delhi Govt Becomes First In India To Introduce Blockchain In Forensics To Aid Crime Investigations

NEW DELHI: The government in Delhi has announced introduction of blockchain in a major move in the field of crime investigation and also become the first in India to adopt the cutting edge technology. The government has introduced this technology in the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in order to protect investigations against tampering and to make it easier to transfer reports to the court.

According to reports, the main benefit of using blockchain technology is improved digital security.

Blockchain is being widely regarded as the next big thing in the world of digital security and it has been reported that banks, financial firms, and governments prefer using this technology to store their sensitive data securely.

According to Delhi government officials, the technology will soon be introduced in securing data such as caste certificates, domicile certificates, character certificates issued by the revenue department. It would also be used in maintaining afforestation records in the national capital.

What Exactly Is Blockchain Technology And How It Will Help?

Blockchain is a digital ledger of transactions that is distributed and maintained across a network of computers, rather than being stored in a single centralized location. This allows for secure and transparent record-keeping.

In forensics, blockchain can be useful in maintaining an unalterable and tamper-proof record of digital evidence. This can improve the accuracy and efficiency of investigations and provide stronger legal evidence. This is possible because blockchain uses cryptographic hashing to make the history of digital assets unalterable and transparent.

In addition, the new system will include security measures to protect FSL data from hacking.

How It Will Work In Investigations?

The government has taken a major step towards improving the process of handling evidence in crime investigations by implementing blockchain technology in four stages of the chain of custody.

An official stated that the technology will be used when samples are received, when the case is assigned to an investigator, during the finalizing of the report, and when it is dispatched.

The implementation of blockchain technology ensures that the record of evidence cannot be altered at any stage, and if there is any attempt to tamper with the record, all authorized persons will be notified immediately. To make a change, a new block must be created in the blockchain.

Has Blockchain Technology Been Used By Indian Govt Earlier Also?

Yes, this is not the first time that blockchain technology has been used in India. Earlier, it was used by the Indian police force. In 2022, the police introduced a new system for filing police complaints that utilizes blockchain technology to prevent corruption.

The system allows the general public to file a “first information report” (FIR) and track it in real time through a web portal built on the Polygon blockchain. With the help of blockchain, the complaints remain public and transparent, and cannot be altered by police officers or administrators.

The use of the technology in various stages of the process of handling evidence in criminal investigations is to make sure that the process of filing complaints is secure, more transparent and tamper-proof.

Security Concerns Associated With Use of Blockchain Technology

•           Hacking: Blockchains are vulnerable to hacking attacks, especially if they are not properly secured.

•           Lack of anonymity: Some blockchains are not completely anonymous, and can be traced back to a specific user.

•           Scalability: Some blockchains are not scalable, which means that they cannot handle large amounts of transactions.

•           Centralization: Some blockchains are centralized, which means that a single entity has control over the network.

To address these security concerns, various measures can be taken such as:

•           Implementing strong encryption techniques to secure the network.

•           Adopting a decentralized architecture to increase the security of the network.

•           Incorporating multi-party computation and secure multi-party computation techniques to increase privacy and security.

•           Regularly updating the software and protocols to address any new security threats.

•           Educating users on best practices for secure usage of blockchain technology.

It is important to keep in mind that the security of a blockchain network depends on the measures taken to secure it, and there is no foolproof solution to the security concerns associated with blockchain technology. However, by taking the right measures and continuously monitoring and updating the security of the network, it is possible to mitigate the security risks associated with the use of blockchain technology.
