Complaints, which spiked early in the year, dropped by 46% due to awareness campaigns via social media, WhatsApp, and school programs. police plan to resume these campaigns post-elections.

By freezing perpetrators’ accounts and following legal protocols, they ensure swift refunds. Awareness campaigns and AI-related scams, like voice cloning, are also being addressed to protect residents.

4. Senior Citizen Duped of Rs 2 Crore in Cyber Fraud Over ‘120 LSD Strips in Your Parcel Seized by Customs’
A senior citizen Pune woman lost Rs 2 crore in a cyber fraud involving criminals posing as NCB officers. They claimed her parcel contained LSD and passports, threatening arrest to extort money. The cybercrime police registered her complaint, noting over 200 similar “drugs in parcel” scams since last year.

5. Three city residents scammed out of Rs. 40.42 lakh through cyber fraud
In Mysuru, three residents lost over Rs. 40 lakh in separate fraud incidents. L.G. Sowmya was duped by a fake stock trading scheme, Samson Rakesh Joseph by fraudsters posing as Mumbai Crime Branch officials, and Mohammed Shibli Roshan by a fraudulent stock trader. police urge caution and verification before financial transactions.

Niconico, a major Japanese video-sharing site, has suspended services due to a cyberattack. Parent company Kadokawa’s websites, including its e-commerce site ebten, were also affected. Kadokawa is investigating, implementing countermeasures, and cooperating with experts and police to ensure safety and address potential data leaks.

7. CarnavalHeist exploit involves weaponizing Word documents
Hackers are exploiting Word documents, employing the CarnavalHeist malware to target Brazilian users. The malware uses Portuguese and Azure hosting in Brazil. It spreads through invoice-themed emails, redirecting to fake sites to download malicious files. It employs deceptive tactics, including overlay attacks on banking websites, capturing credentials, and generating QR codes for fraudulent transactions. Cisco Talos identified ongoing activities since February 2024, with the campaign showing signs of development since late 2023.

8. Fake Google Chrome update used as a cyberattack vector
A new fake Chrome update campaign injects malicious code into vulnerable websites, displaying deceptive pop-up messages urging users to update their browsers. Clicking the provided link redirects to malicious URLs, initiating malware downloads like SocGholish. 341 websites have been compromised, posing a significant cybersecurity threat.

9. Cleveland City Hall Shuts Down Due to Cyber Incident

Cleveland City Hall and satellite offices were closed on Monday after an unspecified cyber incident. IT staff shut down affected computer systems before attempting restoration. Emergency services remained operational, and United Way handled 3-1-1 calls. Employees retained access to cloud-based Office 365 systems.
