Posting Intent To Join ULFA(I) On Facebook Lands Assam Youth Behind Bars

SILCHAR: The Cachar Police in Assam have arrested a young man for posting on Facebook that he wants to join the illegal separatist organisation United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent).

The accused, named as Bappa Kumar, had shared a news item claiming that many young people were joining the terrorist group. Kumar stated that he was also willing to enlist and requested the address of the proscribed organisation.

Cachar Superintendent of Police Ramandeep Kaur stated on Monday that Kumar, a Silchar resident, had been arrested.

“The Cyber Crime portal traced the post on social media by the person, who is a Class 12 passout, and we prepared a report and lodged a case,” Kaur added.

The case, according to Kaur, falls under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Kumar has been placed in judicial custody, according to the official, and the police will attempt to extend his remand.

On March 23, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi voiced concern about Assam youths joining the militant group.

“We must remain cautious as to why so many youths are joining the organisation,” he remarked in the Lok Sabha, while requesting that central agencies investigate the problem in Assam.
