All You Need To Know About Black Lives Matter Activist Xahra Saleem, Jailed for Misappropriating Thousands in Donations

Xahra Saleem, a key figure in the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement and a director of the charity ‘Changing Your Mindset’ in Bristol, has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison by the Bristol Crown Court. The 23-year-old from Romford, London, admitted to fraudulent activities involving thousands of pounds in fundraising donations intended for a BLM protest’s expenses.

Rise to Prominence and Fraudulent Actions

Saleem, known for her involvement in organising a BLM protest in Bristol on June 7, 2020, following the death of George Floyd in the US, gained significant public attention. The protest notably culminated in the toppling of the statue of slave trader Edward Colston in Bristol Harbour.

In the run-up to the protest, Saleem initiated a fundraising campaign to procure Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to support the lawful execution of the march amid COVID-19 restrictions. Impressively, the campaign amassed over £32,000. However, she later confessed to diverting these funds into her personal accounts and misusing them from June 2020 to September 2021.

Misappropriation and Court Proceedings

Judge Michael Longman highlighted that Saleem made over 2,500 transactions from the donation pool for personal expenses, including living costs, a new iPhone, beauty treatments, clothing, online purchases, takeaways, and transportation. The judge underscored the breach of trust, emphasizing that the raised funds were designated for a worthy cause and not for Saleem’s personal use.

Longman emphasized, “The money raised exceeded expectations significantly, and it was supposed to be handled securely for the cause. However, Saleem disregarded this responsibility, providing inconsistent explanations for the missing funds.”

Despite the establishment of a business account in April 2021, the money was not transferred, leading to further suspicion. Saleem’s claims of suffering from psychosis affecting her rational thinking were met with skepticism, especially as she had initially pleaded not guilty.

Closure of ‘Changing Your Mindset’

In the wake of Saleem’s actions, ‘Changing Your Mindset,’ the charity she was associated with, has ceased operations.

The court’s decision, based on Saleem’s admission of guilt and acknowledgement of remorse for her actions, reflects the serious nature of the misuse of donations intended for a social cause.

This incident has prompted introspection within the charitable community, emphasizing the critical need for transparency and accountability in handling fundraising activities.
