CBI's First FIR Under BNS

MOHALI: The Mohali district court has mandated the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) against Inspector Amanjot Kaur of the Mohali district police, who is currently the in-charge of the district’s cyber cell. The order comes in response to allegations of bribery where Inspector Kaur is accused of demanding money to ease the legal troubles of an accused, Vijay Raj Kapuria.

Alleged Demand of Bribe
The case surfaced when Palak Dev, a lawyer and family friend of Kapuria, lodged a complaint alleging that Inspector Kaur sought a bribe of Rs 25 lakh to provide favorable treatment to Kapuria, who was under police custody. The complaint, supported by audio recordings and testimonies, led to the legal proceedings resulting in the court’s current decision.

Failure of Police Vigilance
The situation escalated when an attempt to catch Inspector Kaur in a bribery trap, set up by the Vigilance Bureau, reportedly failed. The failure raised concerns about the potential leak of information and highlighted the challenges in tackling corruption within the police force.

Judicial Directive for Thorough Probe
The court, led by Additional District and Sessions Judge Sandeep Kumar Singla, has directed a senior police official, not below the rank of Superintendent of Police, to oversee the investigation into the serious allegations against Inspector Kaur. This directive aims to ensure a comprehensive and unbiased investigation into the bribery claims, emphasizing the need for justice and accountability in the law enforcement system.
