Stay Safe Online: Bengaluru Cyber Police Warns Against Scam Apps for Government Schemes
BENGALURU: In an effort to safeguard the public from cybercrime, the Cyber Police Department in Bengaluru has issued a warning to citizens about the rise of fraudulent mobile applications claiming to help users register for various government schemes. The department has cautioned people to exercise caution and remain vigilant while downloading and using such apps.
According to the Bengaluru Cyber Police, these malicious applications often disguise themselves as legitimate platforms designed to assist citizens in availing benefits offered by government schemes. However, instead of providing genuine services, they aim to deceive unsuspecting users and steal their personal and financial information.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) in Bengaluru, Sandeep Patil, emphasized the need for citizens to exercise caution when accessing government scheme-related apps. He stated, “With the increasing use of smartphones and the growing popularity of government schemes, cybercriminals are exploiting this trend to trick innocent users. It is crucial for citizens to be aware of such fraudulent activities and take necessary precautions.”
The Cyber Police have also provided guidelines to help citizens identify and avoid falling victim to these scams. They have advised individuals to verify the credibility of any app before downloading it by checking the developer’s information, reviews, and ratings. It is also recommended to download apps only from official app stores, such as Google Play Store or Apple App Store, to minimize the risk of downloading fake or malicious applications.

Users are encouraged to carefully review the permissions requested by the app during installation. Legitimate government scheme-related apps usually require access to limited personal information, such as name, address, and Aadhaar card details. The Cyber Police have urged citizens to report any suspicious apps or incidents of fraud immediately. They have assured the public that appropriate action will be taken against the culprits, emphasizing the importance of timely reporting to curb the growth of such fraudulent activities.
