NEW DELHI: India is facing a severe and growing threat of cybercrime, with a staggering 80 percent of reported incidents emanating from just ten vulnerable districts, as outlined in a recent white paper titled ‘A Deep Dive into Cybercrime Trends Impacting India‘ by the Future Crime Research Foundation (FCRF), a non-profit startup incubated at IIT Kanpur. The study underscores the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and increased awareness among both individuals and organizations.

Unveiling the Top 10 Cybercrime Epicenters

This analysis sheds light on the top ten districts in India most prone to cybercrime, providing insights into the factors contributing to their vulnerability. Addressing these aspects is crucial for devising effective prevention and mitigation strategies.

1. Bharatpur (18%)

High cybercrime rates in Bharatpur are attributed to its proximity to major urban centers like Delhi and Jaipur, potentially making it a hub for cybercriminal activities. Lack of awareness and digital literacy among the population further contributes to its vulnerability.

2. Mathura (12%)

Mathura’s significant cybercrime rate is linked to its status as a prominent tourist destination, leading to a high volume of financial transactions and making it an attractive target for cybercriminals. Limited cybersecurity infrastructure and awareness among businesses and individuals exacerbate the problem.

3. Nuh (11%)

Nuh’s elevated cybercrime rate is influenced by its proximity to the National Capital Region (NCR), attracting both cybercriminals and potential victims. Socioeconomic challenges in the region also contribute, making cybercrime an illicit source of income.

4. Deoghar (10%)

Insufficient law enforcement resources and a lack of specialized cybercrime units contribute to Deoghar’s cybercrime rate. The local population’s limited digital literacy and awareness make them more susceptible to online scams.

5. Jamtara (9.6%)

Jamtara is infamous as a hub for cybercriminal activities, particularly related to online fraud and phishing. The area hosts well-organized criminal networks, fostering a culture of cybercrime.

6. Gurgaon (8.1%)

Gurgaon’s high cybercrime rate is likely influenced by its status as a major corporate and IT hub, attracting cybercriminals seeking valuable data or financial gains. Despite economic affluence, disparities in digital literacy and cybersecurity awareness persist among its diverse population.

7. Alwar (5.1%)

8. Bokaro (2.4%)

9. Karma Tand (2.4%)
