Biometric Cloning: 4 Hackers Arrested For Cloning Fingerprints And Withdrawing Money Using Aadhar Based Payment. 982 Clones Found

Gwalior police have arrested four cybercriminals who stole money from the poor by creating clones of their fingerprints.

According to Gwalior police, these cyber criminals would travel to customer service centres and clone their targets’ fingerprints before withdrawing money from their bank accounts via the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS).

Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS) is a payment system based on the Unique Identification Number and allows Aadhaar cardholders to conduct financial transactions using Aadhaar-based authentication easily.

The AePS system aspires to make it possible for all members of society, particularly those living in rural regions, to use Aadhaar to gain access to financial and banking services.

According to the police investigation, hackers are misusing AePS, allowing users to pay with their Aadhaar numbers and offer Aadhaar authentication at the point of sale (PoS) or micro ATMs. On the other hand, criminals are abusing the technology by cloning their fingerprints. They used to approach their target on government services and schemes pretext.

We discovered that the money was siphoned through AEPS during our investigation. We found that victims never used their thumb impression to withdraw money; instead, a group of hackers copied victims’ fingerprints and Aadhar numbers to carry out unlawful operations.

In earlier cases, police have found the criminals purchased copied fingerprint equipment from prominent online buying websites. He used a biometric machine, a rubber thumb imprint printer, gelatin, a temperature modulator, and other chemicals to create a clone.
